Update the browser extension

Automatic updates for store builds, and how to update a manual ZIP install in Chrome or Edge.

Store-installed builds

Beav installed from the Chrome Web Store updates automatically in the browser, so there is no ZIP to re-download. To check right away, open the extensions page, turn on developer mode, and use the browser's Update action.

If the store page says installed but the features are still old, restart the browser and open the Beav side panel again.

Manually installed ZIP builds

Manual installs do not update through the store. When you update, keep the original extension folder if you can, so a path change does not force the extension identity and the local connection to be re-established.

Update steps

  1. Download the new extension ZIP from the Beav download page.
  2. Stop any capture or browser control task in progress.
  3. Extract the new files.
  4. Overwrite your permanent extension folder with the new files.
  5. Confirm manifest.json is still at the top level of that folder.
  6. Open chrome://extensions or edge://extensions.
  7. Click Reload on the Beav extension card.
  8. Refresh the target pages that are already open.
  9. Open the side panel and confirm the connection status and the version have updated.

Do not delete the old folder first

If you delete the old folder and then load the new build from a different path, the browser may treat it as a brand new unpacked extension. Existing connections, permission grants, or injected site scripts may need to be set up again.

When you must move the folder, stop the tasks first, remove the old extension from the extensions page, load the new permanent folder, and finish with one web page save to verify.

When an update does not take effect

  • Confirm where the build came from and the version number on the extension card.
  • For store builds, wait for the browser's automatic update or use the update action on the extensions page.
  • After clicking Reload, refresh the target pages.
  • Close and reopen the side panel.
  • If old features still show, restart the browser and Beav.
